Comfort Cases inspires communities to bring dignity and hope to youth in foster care. On any given day, more than 330,000 children are in the foster care system across the United States. Most are removed from their homes with little more than the clothes on their backs. If they do have personal belongings, they are often given a trash bag to carry them.

What is a Comfort Case?

Comfort Cases is working to eliminate trash bags from the foster care system. The organization provides children entering care with a backpack or small duffel bag filled with essential items for their first few nights in a new environment. Each case provides comfort, love, and hope, containing items like a blanket or quilt, pajamas, a stuffed animal, a journal or coloring book, a reading book, and a hygiene kit.
Additionally, they distribute "Comfort XLs"—large duffel bags designed to carry a child's larger belongings so they never have to experience the indignity of using a trash bag. Since 2014, Comfort Cases has impacted the lives of over 235,000 youth across all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.

How We Support This Effort

In collaboration with our favorite Moda Fabric Rep, Tracy, we make quilts and collect personal item donations to support this mission. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our sewing community, we made significant donations in both 2025 and 2026.

Here is how you can get involved:

Join a Sew Day: We host Comfort Cases Sew Days throughout the year. Check our class calendar for upcoming dates, complete with fun prize drawings for participants.

Grab a Quilt Kit: We offer small, easy-to-make quilt kits. You can purchase a kit to sew and return, or buy one to donate so another creator can stitch it.

Donate Your Talent: We have pre-made kits available at no charge if you donate your time and talent to construct the quilt top.

Let Us Finish It: Drop off your completed quilt tops at Boone. We will supply the batting and backing, finish the quilting, and send the completed comfort item to a child in need. Feel free to stop by the shop anytime to pick up a kit or learn more!
